Opinion: Newsom channels Brown to boost ‘moderate’ profile

SACRAMENTO – During Jerry Brown’s governorship, political pundits and lawmakers always waited anxiously to see which bills he would sign and veto. Brown is of course a liberal Democrat, but his decisions could be unpredictable. He seemed motivated by principles that sometimes were hard to discern but were rooted in his Jesuit training and intellectual musings.

Brown likely had presidential ambitions but the clock ran out. Brown’s 54-year-old successor, Gov. Gavin Newsom, is nurturing his own White House hopes. It’s not surprising that Newsom is turning to the Brown playbook to boost his national chances by positioning himself as a moderate on select issues and turning the end-of-session signing-and-veto watch into a guessing game.

On these pages, the California Policy Center’s Will Swaim pointed to Newsom’s decision to delay the closure of the Diablo Canyon nuclear plant to forestall electrical blackouts and announced a water plan that called for significant new infrastructure building. Nevertheless, Newsom has recently engaged in a remarkable tussle with President Joe Biden over a farm-worker unionization bill that would destroy farmworkers’ use of private ballots in union elections. As Western Growers told Politico, “It essentially amounts to a forced union submission, because even the mail-in voting provision allows the labor organization representative to fill out the ballot.
