MANLIUS, New York — A swan who had been a fixture at a pond in this northern New York village was stolen during the Memorial Day weekend and was later consumed by a family, police say.says Faye and her four babies, called cygnets, were taken Saturday from the Manlius Swan Pond but police weren’t notified until Monday.

The four cygnets were recovered Tuesday, two at a business in Salina, N.Y., and two others at a residence in Syracuse, police say. Police say a resident spotted the two cygnets at the business after a notice had been posted about the missing birds.“The mother swan was consumed,” Manlius Mayor Paul Whorrall said Wednesday. “Sad to say, but that’s what they did.”

The cygnets will be cared for and returned to the pond in a few weeks when they are old enough to survive on their own. Mute swans have been a fixture in Manlius for more than 100 years, even though they are considered an invasive species,
