In January, he was elevated to co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, and now will call plays at the college level for the first time.

Quarterback Frank Harris, right, and running back Tye Edwards will lead a UTSA offense led by new offensive coordinator Will Stein, who head coach Jeff Traylor calls “freaky smart.”When Will Stein was hired to join Charlie Strong’s staff at Texas as a quality control coach ahead of the 2015 season, he moved into a place in Lake Travis with a family he knew from his days as a player at Louisville.

After two years as UTSA’s pass-game coordinator and wide receivers coach, Stein in January was elevated to co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, set to call plays at the college level for the first time in his career. Stein added the West Coast principles he learned at Louisville, Traylor brought the spread concepts he implemented at Gilmer, and the group developed an approach and terminology Traylor hoped would persist at UTSA through any changes to his assistant staff.

Stein said his involvement in constructing the offense from its inception has created a “really smooth transition” in his move to coordinator — a shift he called “a dream come true.”
