New tech based on the Matter standard will help you and your Siri, Google and Alexa...
Products based on this new standard designed to end the balkanization of smart-home tech have finally started rolling out, adorned with the Matter logo. If you’re just getting started, you’ll definitely want to begin with Matter-enabled gear. But If you’ve got a mature smart-home setup that’s working well, there’s no need to rush out and replace current hardware.
She chalks up the slow adoption to confusion around standards and difficulty getting products to work together. For example, many smart-home devices are designed to work with Google Assistant or Amazon’s Alexa. Apple has its HomeKit platform, voice-controlled by Siri, but Google or Amazon-compatible products often won’t work with it. And while many products compatible with Samsung’s SmartThings platform work with Google Assistant or Alexa, they won't with Siri.
A separate organization has created Thread, a new wireless specification — similar to WiFi and Bluetooth — that uses a low-power mesh network for efficient, inter-device communications. All Matter-compliant devices use the Matter protocol, but not all those devices will have Thread. Now, in a setup without Matter, when you install a new smart-home device you download an app to a smartphone which walks you through the process of getting the device on to your home’s WiFi network.
There will be no Matter app, though iPhones running the latest version of Apple’s iOS operating system have a Matter menu item.
