SAN ANTONIO — Nearly 30 years after Meals on Wheels San Antonio settled into its current headquarters on the Northwest Side, it’s preparing for a major upgrade to meet increasing demand.on a 6.5-acre property near San Antonio International Airport, with plans to begin cooking meals there for delivery to local seniors after a celebratory party on Nov. 10.

But what’s really striking is its size. Its refrigeration area is larger than all of the nonprofit’s current kitchen, while the new kitchen is larger than all of the current headquarters.“The majority of what we will be able to produce in the kitchen is going to be from scratch. We can’t do that now,” he said as he led a tour of the facility. “We haven’t been able to cook raw chicken in probably 20 years.

The funding has come from a patchwork of public and private sources, including $1 million from the city of San Antonio’s 2022-27 bond program, $5 million from the U.S Department of the Treasury’s New Markets Tax Credit program and about $11 million in donations, with support from the Greehey Family Foundation, the Dobson family and local companies such as H-E-B, Jefferson Bank and Valero Energy.

Faris and Meals on Wheels Chief Strategy and Development Officer Forrest Myane recently met to discuss the benefits of the new facility, how the nonprofit met the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and the services offered by the Grace Place program. The following has been edited for brevity and clarity.People became more aware of Meals on Wheels and what we did.
