Bill Byrne, above, replaced Wally Groff as athletic director in one of the many changes Robert Gates implemented when he became school president in 2002.COLLEGE STATION — Twenty years ago this summer, the shakers of Texas A&M figured they’d seen enough, capped by what they considered the sickening sight of A&M’s then-athletic director handing over a national championship trophy to the Texas baseball coach on national television.

That was admittedly a bit uncomfortable, with a handful of the coaches about to be shown the door in the crowd, and fits of brutal honesty spouting from the stage. But the actual shakeup had started in May 2002, when A&M chose former CIA director Robert Gates over then-retiring U.S. Sen. Phil Gramm as university president to succeed Ray Bowen.

Gates set the tone early. Athletic director Wally Groff, an A&M graduate and solid accountant but hardly a sports visionary, announced his resignation the same month Gates officially started. Mind you, this all was a decade before A&M exited the Big 12 for the SEC, a whole new and much more extensive shakeup. So how did that all shaking and moving cranking up 20 years ago pan out for the Aggies? Like some relationships and a kid’s Halloween candy haul, it’s complicated and a mixed bag.
