Encouraging this further is a chassis that benefits from additional bracing and more stiffness than the DB11’s platform. The tighter connection between chassis and powertrain is much more closely aligned and harmonious, the former seamlessly in tune with the latter.
Slow corners reveal a car with a precise front end that’s reactive and agile, turning without any fuzziness or indecision. Step up to medium pace curves and the flow and solidity the chassis delivers starts to work the active dampers harder, calling on their larger operating window to manage the mass which they do without complaint.
There’s a consistent flow running through the car, each action delivering the expected reaction. Any movement felt across the body is to the level your eyes have told you to expect, the fluidity and poise it generates from turn-in to exit not only inspires more confidence than you’re expecting but engages you far more in the process of driving.
However, dig deeper and a few of the DB12’s shortcomings raise their hand; noticeable because the rest of the car is such a step on from what’s been before. Key amongst these is the steering that lacks the linearity of previous Astons – it feels like ultimate grip was a priority over a clear sense of connection – and a more ‘switched-on’ character than the long-legged, less reactive DB11.
Ultimately, the DB12 is the car Aston Martin needs it to be. It doesn’t just pick the goal posts up and drive off into the sunset with them, but it’s created a new game for the firm. It’s an Aston Martin sports, GT,– call it what you will – that requires no more excuses.
