Nerlens Noel’s 10-day contract expired Wednesday and the Nets won’t be signing the center to another one.
The 28-year-old appeared in three games since joining the Nets after starting the season with Detroit.
The sixth overall pick in the 2013 draft was brought on to backup Nic Claxton, with Ben Simmons out indefinitely and former first-round pick Day’Ron Sharpe unable to get off the bench.The 6-foot-11 Noel played significant time in the Nets win in Houston and loss in Milwaukee on their recent five-game road trip, but only seven minutes in the three games since.
Noel has been a disappointment since playing at Kentucky, including the previous two seasons with the Knicks.The second-year guard, who made headlines when he scored 40-plus points in three straight games following the departures of Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving last month, has become nearly invisible, seemingly replaced as Spencer Dinwiddie’s backup by the more experienced Seth Curry.
In his first game getting meaningful minutes again, Curry struggled from the floor and the Knicks sent the Nets to their fourth consecutive defeat.The 32-year-old Curry is in his 10th NBA season and appeared in the playoffs four times, while Thomas appeared for just 22 seconds in the Nets’ four-game sweep to the Celtics in the playoffs last season.
