Netflix took 'the Marvel approach' when pitching the Tolkien estate on their idea for a Lord of the Rings streaming universe, suggesting shows centered on Gandalf and Aragorn. The pitch reportedly 'completely freaked out the estate.'

A new report reveals that, prior to Amazon acquiring the rights, Netflix pitched the Tolkien Estate a Lord of the Rings universe, which would've featured Aragorn and Gandalf shows. Based on the beloved fantasy novels by author J.R.R. Tolkien, Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy was met with critical and commercial acclaim. The movies follow Frodo , a Hobbit, as he embarks on an epic quest across Middle-earth with a fellowship of companions to destroy the One Ring.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Amazon acquired the rights to The Lord of the Rings in 2017, paying the Tolkien estate well over $200 million amidst stiff competition from other interested parties. After years of anticipation, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power finally hit Prime Video earlier this month, earning generally strong reviews from critics with some division among fans.

Why Netflix's LOTR Pitch Wouldn't Have Worked Although "the Marvel approach," in itself, is not a bad idea for The Lord of the Rings, attempting to tell new stories with Aragorn and Gandalf and characters that audiences are already familiar with is a risky move. As The Rings of Power has already demonstrated, recasting key characters like Galadriel and Elrond inevitably leads to comparisons with the original actors to play those parts.

While The Rings of Power has proven somewhat divisive among fans, it takes place so long before the events of The Lord of the Rings that it feels, in many ways, like a separate entity. Aside from Galadriel and Elrond, The Rings of Power chronicles the lives of heroes audiences have mostly never seen before, and the visual aesthetic, while reminiscent of Jackson's trilogy, is also unique.
