As the news started to spread among those living in the area — especially residents of The Town of Ft. Sheridan built on the site of the former military base that closed in 1993 — some people began walking their dogs and pushing their babies in strollers on the newly opened property.

Openlands, which opened the preserve in 2011 after restoring it for public use, closed it in April 2021, when explosives were found on the property. It remained shuttered until the Forest Preserves District took ownership last week. Newly stationed at the Captain James A.
