An effort to advance a bill that would ban abortion around the sixth week of pregnancy fell one vote short of breaking a filibuster in the Nebraska Legislature. The bill is unlikely to move forward this year.

Nebraska state Sen. Joni Albrecht, R-Thurston, is pictured in the Legislative Chamber in Lincoln, Neb., March 1, 2019. Albrecht is again seeking to restrict abortion access in the state after her bill last year to ban all abortions narrowly failed. A second of three rounds of debate was scheduled Thursday, April 27, 2023, on her bill this year that would ban abortion once cardiac activity can be detected in an embryo.
