Mark Emmert, who has served as president of the NCAA for 12 years, is stepping down from the role

, the association announced Tuesday. Emmert will stay on as president until his replacement is found or until June 30, 2023, the NCAA said in a statement.

"With the significant transitions underway within college sports, the timing of this decision provides the Association with consistent leadership during the coming months plus the opportunity to consider what will be the future role of the president," NCAA Board of Governors Chair John J. DeGioia said."It also allows for the selection and recruitment of the next president without disruption.

But Emmert has been viewed by some as not a catalyst for change but as an obstacle standing in the way — or at the least reactive instead of proactive.for Emmert that ran through the 2025, a move that left many in college sports bewildered. Emmert was appointed to the job in April 2010. He had led the University of Washington and LSU prior to taking over in Indianapolis.
