TIRR Memorial Hermann's Peggy Turner honored at Final Four for work with athletes with disabilities

, has dedicated her 41-year career to making athletics more inclusive. She’s being honored for that work while the NCAA men’s basketball Final Four is in Houston this weekend.given by the NCAA to individuals who make a positive change in the community. She and the other recipients received a commemorate plaque during a luncheon, and they will be recognized during the NCAA men’s basketball championship game Monday night at NRG Stadium.

The opportunity was thrilling for athletes like Rosharan resident Samuel Haynes, 18, who has been a member of the Hotwheels for six years. Haynes has, an extremely rare condition that affects the lower half of the body, and credits Turner and the Hotwheels program for giving him an opportunity to play basketball.

Turner said she’s humbled by the recognition from the NCAA, though she’s quick to share credit with everyone who’s helped her throughout her career. She’s mostly happy to see the Hotwheels athletes get the chance to take part in Final Four weekend. “If there was a Ph. D in mistakes, I’d have it,” she said. “It’s trial and error. It’s mistakes and trying to learn from those mistakes.”
