A Naperville doctor has taken an active role in trying to treat and prevent migraines. He is in the midst of a national study to determine if the drug Rimegepant can be an effective solution to preventing them.
Dr. Riaz Baber, a Naperville-based psychiatrist and researcher, is seeking children who have migraine headaches for a study he's conducting.“I consider myself lucky that I never had one,” the 76-year-old Naperville-based psychiatrist and researcher said. “About 15 percent of adults have had it at one time or another. I’m lucky I’m not one of those 15 percent.
The study has been underway for eight months and will likely last another year before they have enough data to know if the drug can taken to the Food and Drug Administration for possible approval. The World Health Organization says migraines are one of the 10 most disabling medical illnesses and 8% to 15% of high school teens and 4% to 11% of elementary school-aged children get them.
Locally, any child between the ages of 6 and 17 who has had one to six migraines for at least six months is eligible for the study. The first step is to call the research center at 630-272-4844. After a answering few questions to see if the child qualifies, he or she is invited with both parents to meet with Baber.
