N.J. zoo to permanently close its bird exhibit, relocate animals

The Cape May County Park and Zoo announced the closure of the World of Birds aviary on Friday. The closing date has not yet been set.

“As one of the oldest attractions at the Zoo, 25 years of tropical conditions has taken its toll on the building, and necessary maintenance and repairs have become unsustainable,” Cape May zoo officials said in a statement on Facebook.

“Over the next several months we will be working diligently to relocate our birds to zoos across the country,” they said. “After which the building will be decommissioned and eventually removed.” Located in Middle Township, the 52-acre zoo, which does not charge admission, but accepts donations, has beenIn a comment below the post, zoo officials said they don’t have a closing date yet.

“While the closure of this beloved part of the Cape May County Zoo is sad news we look forward to the future where we can bring new and upgraded avian habitats to our visitors,” they said. “Please bear with us as the process of removing the World of Birds Aviary and the construction of new avian habitats will create some inconvenience and disruption in the very heart of the Zoo, but we believe the new habitats will be well worth it!” they said.have also faced difficulties in recent years. In 2022, three of Middlesex County’s park zoos were scheduled to close, although the avian flu disrupted officials’ plans in quickly closing the zoo at Johnson Park.
