The state Board of Education was considering raising the passing score from 725 to 750.

A heated debate over academic standards ended with a narrow, 6-to-5 vote when the board accepted a recommendation by the New Jersey Department of Education to set the minimum passing score at 725 on the General Proficiency Assessment, the test that juniors must take in order to graduate.

Just about everyone on the board agreed that a student’s performance on the high school graduation exam was no predictor of college success. But the trustees split on whether a tougher standard would encourage students to learn and achieve more.
