Without getting into specifics, police in a news release cited “recent law enforcement incidents involving children under the age of 18.”
Under the town code, no one under age 18 may be out in public between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. unless “accompanied by his or her parent, guardian or other person having legal care or custody of such child or ... by a responsible person of good repute over 18 ... .” The rule applies to children “on foot or in or upon any type of conveyance,” and exempts “chool, civic, church, employment, legitimate social functions supervised by adults or errands involving medical emergencies ... .”
Parents, guardians and others in charge of minors also bear responsibility for keeping those under 18 off “the public streets, highways, alleys, parks or other public spaces of the Town of Phillipsburg” during the overnight hours “... unless reasonable necessity can be shown ... .” Violations upon conviction can result in community service and a fine of $1,000, and a parent or guardian can be required to join the minor in performing the community service, as well.Note to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission.
