Constantine Maroulis starring as Alan Freed, the first disc jockey to play rock and roll.It takes a moment to recognize Constantine Maroulis starring in “Rock & Roll Man.”

Like most people, Maroulis, 47, knew Freed’s name and that it was associated with rock, but not much beyond that. Maroulis understands that to those who saw him star in “Rock of Ages” on Broadway in 2009, for which he was Tony-nominated, and as the lead in “,” he may be forever a young rocker. Maroulis was also in “The Wedding Singer,” “Rent,” and other musicals and has acted in films – “5th Borough,” “Stuck” and on TV in “Mozart in the Jungle,” and “Madam Secretary.”

"Music came to me with confidence, and I found this huge rock voice and also like a contemporary musical theater sound," he says. “It’s been wonderful to be synonymous with shows like 'Rock of Ages' or my time on 'American Idol,' but I’ve gotten to do a lot of cool stuff. Every actor longs for the opportunity to create the next new big role, and one hopes that people will see me differently in this.

“So, I was sad, and I feel like I was self-medicating,” he adds. “I didn’t like where I was at, and I just put it all down. I never got into hard drugs or anything like that, but I felt like I needed to make a change. And so, I never drank again. I never smoked again. I didn’t intend to do that. I put it down for a little bit, then it was a month, and I haven’t touched anything. It’ll be four years.

Much younger than his siblings, he saw his brother play Bernardo in a school production. At Ramapo High School, Maroulis tried to follow in his footsteps as the leader of the Sharks.
