An Union County police department has taken action in the wake of a social media post that has led to a nationwide surge in thefts of Kias and Hyundais., showed how to start these vehicles without a key in as little as 20 to 30 seconds, according to a release from the Linden Police Department, which has now partnered with the manufacturers to provide free steering wheel locks to car owners.
In Linden, there have been 30 reported incidents of stolen Hyundai and Kia vehicles in the last six months, authorities said. In April, a group of Attorneys Generalw21 from 17 states and the District of Columbia, sent a letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration urging for a mandatory recall of certain Kia and Hyundai vehicles manufactured between 2011 and 2022, officials said.
