The deadly shooting happened in Newark on Aug. 2, 2022.
Davion Sumler was found shot multiple times on the 300 block of South 20th Street at 1:40 a.m. on Aug. 2 and was pronounced dead at the scene shortly thereafter, according to a statement from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
Juan Leandry, 23, of Newark, was arrested and charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, arson, conspiracy to commit arson and weapons-related offenses, the office said. It was unclear why Leandry was facing arson-related charges and a spokesperson for the office could not immediately provide clarification to NJ Advance Media.
Following his arrest, Leandry was being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark, officials said.
