Munguía: ‘We’re ready to put on a show. Expect fireworks. There’s gonna be a lot of punches thrown.’
ONTARIO — As Jaime Munguía locked eyes with his 37-year-old Ukrainian-born opponent, Sergiy Derevyanchenko, during Thursday’s pre-fight faceoff at the Toyota Arena, there was a sense of mutual understanding that this fight can make or break the next phase of their respective careers.
“This fight is an opportunity my career,” Derevyanchenko said. “This will give me chances to fight for a title.” The 26-year-old fighter from Tijuana has expressed in the past couple of years that he wants to fight a bigger-name opponent. He said that Saturday’s fight against Derevyanchenko is the stylistic matchup he’s been looking for.
Derevyanchenko is known for his technique and toughness as he has never been knocked out in his professional career. His skill set will be put to the test facing one of the hardest punchers in the division in Munguía who has knocked out 33 of his opponents.
