FCC filings double down on the reports that new earbuds are coming from Apple, and likely soon.
, which spotted the detail in the FCC database, there are two listings, one for the left earbud, one for the right. The applicant is named as Apple Inc, though not much else is revealed.
Details in the iOS code are more helpful, suggesting that the earbuds will be called Beats Studio Buds+, which is why the headphones are so interesting. The current Beats Studio Buds are highly compelling earbuds, priced at just $149.99 but with active noise-cancelling on board. However, because the chip is a Beats one rather than an Apple processor, some features are missing, notably the ear detection introduced on the first AirPods. This is what means that when you remove an AirPod from your ear, the music playback pauses until you put it back.
The Studio Buds are pleasingly small and fit the ears well, and are comfortable even for long listening sessions. Reports have suggested that the new buds will look similar to the original Studio Buds but come in a different color, black with gold detailing.
