Motor Mouth: The EPA and automakers in an emissions battle royale — via drivingdotca Sustainability ElectricVehicles
Nor is there much reason for domestic automakers to embrace anything else other than the huge pickups domestic automakers are focussing their electrification efforts on. Consumers have been switching from sedans to trucks and SUVs for decades, despite their pitiful fuel economy and wanton emissions. Indeed, most of the statistics listed in the reasons to hold automakers to account — their fleet average fuel economies going up, specific automakers not meeting targets, etc.
Nor can the government hold its head high in this regard. About a decade ago, American regulators changed their fuel economy rules to a “footprint” model. Essentially, what that means is that while individual cars had to improve their fuel economy — by roughly five per cent year-over-year for passenger cars and 3.5 per cent for trucks — it was based solely on the size of the vehicle.
