Mother and daughter diagnosed with heart failure say implant device ‘increased our quality of life’
Iris Welch, 62, and her mother, Annie Watkins, 88, have the same biomedical device implanted to monitor their heart health. They are pictured here at Welch’s Houston home on December 16, 2022.She realized something was wrong when she started experiencing shortness of breath while doing daily activities, and felt tired more often than usual.
“I was driving home thinking, ‘This is so wild’. I knew something was going on, but I wasn’t expecting it to be that bad,” she said. "When I met Iris, her heart was weak and pumping less than half the normal amount that healthy hearts pump," he said. “With medications, we were able to improve a lot of her symptoms and the function of her heart. But she was not back to 100 percent."
“I had two wearable devices in my chest, but after they were put in, I still didn’t feel any better,” she said. In 2015, she learned about technology designed to keep people with her condition out of the hospital for fluid drainage.
