More people are dying while being treated for common ailments — including bloodstream infections, diabetes and abnormal heartbeats — at Pennsylvania hospitals than five years ago, according to a new annual report.
The annual “Hospital Performance Report” looks at mortality and readmission rates for 13 common conditions, such as heart failure, kidney failure, intestinal obstruction and stroke. Hospitals in central Pennsylvania show a mixed bag of results, with numerous instances of hospitals having significantly higher than expected death rates, and also instances of significantly better than expected results.— WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital, UPMC Pinnacle and Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College had significantly worse than expected mortality rates.
There are many instances of central Pennsylvania hospitals having better than expected death or readmission rates for some conditions while having worse than expected results from others.
