Missouri City woman works through devastating disease to raise $100K for lupus research, awareness

Missouri City resident Cheryl Yetz lives with lupus every day but has the support of her family and friends who have helped her raise more than $100,000 for lupus research and awareness. Here, her grandson wears an “Are We There Yetz?” sweatshirt from her fundraising team. After suffering a stroke at just 28, Cheryl Yetz played a painful and exhausting game of medical Whac-a-Mole, with major setback after another before being diagnosed with lupus 17 years later.

“It took a lot longer only because it didn't manifest in the same way, and I think years ago, it took even longer, right?” Yetz said. “So, when I had the stroke and when other things were happening, I never was referred to a rheumatologist ever. Nobody ever suspected, even though it was so odd to have a stroke at such a young age.”

Yetz was diagnosed with Crohn’s, another autoimmune disease, but her symptoms did not completely match up. Her condition began to improve some as she took medications. Yetz’s general practitioner recommended a rheumatologist. She resisted. She had already seen plenty of doctors and doubted a new one would have any answers either.

Many people know very little about lupus, even in the medical community, Yetz said. She said that is a big part of the problem with why diagnosis often takes so long. Since her diagnosis, Yetz has become her own “advocate on steroids.” She said she is constantly educating people about the disease and has learned to walk away from medical providers who refuse to make lupus the basis of her care.

Even when Yetz is feeling terrible, she gets dressed and puts on makeup and a “brave face” to live life as best as she is able as she refuses to lie around and die. A frustrating part is that most of the time she doesn’t look sick even though her body is constantly throwing pain and fatigue at her. Many people, she said, lack empathy because they have no idea what’s going on below the surface.
