, here are a few things you need to know about the man who will be spearheading the new era in Houston public education.Miles graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a degree in engineering. He spent five years as a U.S. Army Ranger before joining the U.S. State Department as a diplomat in 1990, leaving that post in 1995 to pursue an education.
"The challenge with Mike Miles wasn't his ideas of turning around schools or trying to reform education, the challenge with Mike Miles was his approach with people. He's a military-minded person, he came in saying 'It's my way or the highway,' and he didn't do well with Dallas politics," said Edward Turner, a longtime Dallas education advocate.
After leaving Dallas ISD, Miles founded and served as CEO of Third Future Schools, a charter school network with campuses in Texas and Colorado."Perhaps the biggest failure of the current education ecosystem is its inability to envision what the future holds for our students and to make systemic changes now to prepare them for that future," Miles wrote in a January essay for The 74, a nonprofit education news organization.
