The mayor of New York City declared an emergency Friday over the influx of migrants being bused in by Texas and other Republican-led states, saying the city is on pace to spend $1 billion on services 'on this crisis.'

and other Republican-led states, saying the city is on pace to spend $1 billion on services"on this crisis."Democratic Mayor Eric Adams said 61,000 people were in the city's shelters, the largest number in recorded history, and that 1 in 5 of them were asylum-seekers who were"simply dropped off without notice, coordination or care.""Our right-to-shelter laws, our social services and our values are being exploited for political gain," Adams said.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who has been at the forefront of the busing effort, has framed it as a means to ease the strain on Texas border towns and , who he and other Republicans say is doing too little to curb a historic surge in migration at the southern border."Sanctuary cities like New York City experience a fraction of what Texas border communities face every day," Abbott wrote Friday on Twitter, responding to the mayor's emergency declaration."We'll continue busing migrants to NYC, DC, and Chicago to relieve our overwhelmed border towns until Biden does his job to secure the border.
