After a 3 year hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Midnight Sun Intertribal Powwow returns to Fairbanks.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - After 3 years without, the Midnight Sun Intertribal Powwow has returned to Fairbanks, allowing members of the greater Fairbanks area to witness and learn more about the gathering of Alaska Natives and Native Americans.
The Midnight Sun Intertribal Powwow is a traditional powwow which has become less common in the 21st century. “We don’t compete for prize money, we bring our community together so we can enjoy life together as a family,” said Benno Cleveland, the elder advisor for the 2023 edition of the Midnight Sun Intertribal Powwow. In the lower 48, Native Americans have more recently taken to competitive powwows more often.
Cleveland reiterated the importance of rebuilding in 2023, but he also had a specific mission in mind as the elder advisor. While the powwow is a time to share and embrace other cultures, it is also a time for the elders to pass down the knowledge and traditions of their people to the youth.
