With his romantic and sensual sensibility, and custom looks for Harry Styles, the Paris-based designer is quickly gaining traction.
. But once you see more of his work, its haunting, romantic, and seductive sensibility will be the only thing you think about when you hear his name next. Arturo Obegero, or “Turo,” was born in the small Spanish village Tapia de Casariego, in the northern region of Asturias. He grew up surrounded by Spanish culture: bullfighting, perfectly tailored matador suits, and romantic flamenco dresses. He loves dance, and has a soft spot for feathers, pearls, beading, and silks.
That “bizarre mix” helps explain some of Obegero’s aesthetic. His collections revolve around deftly cut sharp tailoring, and the way he cuts, usually on the masc form, qualifies as homoerotic too—a romantic but overt sensuality. “I visited a matador tailor in Madrid once, and it was insane,” he continues, “it’s like aatelier, all beaded, all stitched one by one.” This may also help explain his tendency to explore the couture-ish end of clothes making.
While it would be easy to label his work as genderless, Obegero says that he doesn’t quite subscribe to the denomination. “When I design, I just make the pieces and try them on different models, and based on that we fit them and see.” His knowledge of patternmaking and construction often means that he fixates on the classicality of cuts, which doesn’t always allow for gender neutrality. Androgynous might be a better word, as his clothes are still fluid in their sensibility.
