EDITORIAL: Bibb wasn’t elected to impede governance in Cleveland by feuding with City Council. He wasn’t elected to stage a boycott in a childish snit. Bibb was elected to lead, and a leader shows up, no matter what.
As an oft-repeated late-19th century aphorism about Chicago’s rough-and-tumble politics had it, “politics ain’t beanbag.”
Beyond that, City Council’s business requires the presence of the mayor and his team to answer questions from council and to hear council’s feedback about City Hall policies. Similar, in a way, to the British prime minister’s question time before Parliament, it’s an essential part of governing, as a leader, to be present, to take the heat, to defend one’s actions but also to understand concerns and to provide answers about policies and plans going forward.
Polensek’s anger had come on the heels of a weekend of violence that included a mass shooting downtown, in which there were injuries but no fatalities, and a fatal shoot-out in Polensek’s Ward 8 in Collinwood, apparently between rival youth gangs.
