We got to see them together in action, first in “The Case Of The Missing Lifeguard,” where they combined their strengths to get to the bottom of Billy’s creepy behavior.
Fun as it is to watch Max and Eleven kick butt together, their connection feels strongest when they’re just hanging out as friends. This season was particularly redemptive in the way it subverted their once jealousy-ridden relationship. This time, boys didn’t tear them apart, they brought them together. After Mike bails on El and lies to her, she seeks out Max, who takes El under her wing in the best way.
Max proves to be a true friend by supporting El’s autonomy in all aspects of her life. When the rest of the gang worries that El is overextending herself, Max vouches for El’s ability to determine her own limits. When Hopper demands El hide away in his cabin, Max insists that they go to the mall instead, giving El a much-needed taste of freedom. With this foundation of empathy and empowerment, the two form the kind of friendship that El, and every kid, deserves.
