Former Republican Florida state Sen. Don Gaetz, father of Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), is eyeing a return to the state Senate in 2024.
The older Gaetz, who served in the chamber from 2006 to 2016, is running for the seat in District 1, according to the Associated Press. He told the outlet he is running to make the Sunshine State more affordable.“It’s apparent that while we are a low tax state, we are also a high electricity cost, high insurance if you can find it state and a high housing cost state,” Gaetz told the Associated Press. “High costs, these kitchen table issues, make it hard for people to live here.
While Don Gaetz announces another run for state Senate, Matt Gaetz is the center of attention in Washington, D.C., after announcing a motion to vacate House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Monday. A vote is expected on the motion to vacate on Tuesday. Don Gaetz's intentions to return to Tallahassee also come as reports swirl about his son eyeing a run for governor of Florida in 2026. Don Gaetz told the Associated Press that Matt Gaetz will not pursue a run for governor.
“Matt’s not pursuing any run for governor. He’s pushing forward tackling budget and spending problems in Washington and fighting for term limits,” Don Gaetz told the outlet.When asked about the rumors of a gubernatorial run in 2026, Matt Gaetz dismissed the claims when speaking to reporters last month.
"I am not — I am not interested in any of that," Gaetz said."When it comes to politics, I have no goals beyond 2024, and I'm not going to talk about political races while in the Capitol."
