Michael McCarthy charge wins Gr. II Eddie Read after a few bumps in road
First of all, Master Piece wouldn’t have been running in Sunday’s Grade II Eddie Read Stakes at Del Mar had the original field gone off as entered.But after a rather long review of the start, Master Piece was officially declared the 16-1, long-shot winner of the 11/8-mile, $250,000 turf test for older horses.
Master Piece was next-to-last after a half mile and still seventh at with a quarter-mile to go and fourth at the top of the stretch. Master Piece, whose best finish in a stakes race since being imported from South America was a second in the 2021 Grade II Del Mar Handicap, paid $34.20 to win. Earlier, Hernandez’s agent, Craig O’Bryan discussed how the relocation of five-time Del Mar riding champion Flavien Prat to the East Coast has affected the availability of good mounts for Hernandez and other jockeys.
