Opinion | Masket: Why is Boebert OK with attacks on democracy?

For all practical purposes, the terms republic and democracy are synonyms. American leaders have used those terms interchangeably based on the fashions of their times, and of course, the American system of government has aspects both of direct self-rule and of trustee-style representation. Boebert seems to be expanding its use to say that democracy wasn’t really endangered on January 6th because it never existed in the first place. Or something.
Rather, our nation has certain political values, like limited government, checks and balances, national sovereignty, the rule of law, and more, and just having more votes doesn’t exempt you from those values. This argument, while running contrary to the ideals of pure democracy, isn’t necessarily wrong.
