San Antonio comic book artist Chris Allen has followed Spider-Man’s adventures since he was a kid, tracing Spidey comics with his older brother Curtis in Florida. Now he has the great power and the great responsibility of drawing Spider-Man as an official artist for Marvel Comics.an elite group of illustrators from around the world that the publisher spotlights with exclusive contracts and marketing. Of the artists assembled this year, Allen is the only one in the United States.
Later this month, Marvel will publish Allen's first-ever cover art for the company, with an alternate cover for"Miles Morales: Spider-Man" No. 42, available Sept. 28.Allen has drawn for several indie comics publishers, including San Antonio-based Antarctic Press, and illustrated other dynamic characters, such as Sonic the Hedgehog and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Allen grew up in Winter Park, Fla., just northeast of Orlando. During high school art class, his teacher caught him drawing superheroes instead of his assignments. Rather than give him detention for the doodles, the instructor introduced him to Bill Black, founder of what’s now AC Comics in Orlando. She then gave Allen class credit for whatever work he did for Black.
