The legal complaint claims the ball was thrown by former Angels outfielder Juan Lagares, who had just caught a third out to retire the opposing side
A man blinded in his left eye after an Angels outfielder allegedly hurled a baseball into the crowded stands during a game in Anaheim last summer is suing the team and the former player.
During the top of the sixth inning, Lagares caught the third out, the lawsuit said, stopping official play. Mermelstein, who was sitting in the outfield bleachers, looked down to eat some peanuts, his attorney wrote. The lawsuit alleges that Lagares took the baseball he had just caught and “randomly hurled the ball into the stands at high velocity.”
“This was a man who was already at one of the lowest points of his life,” Marcereau said during an interview. “He went to the Angels game to get his mind off his troubles, and what should have been a good time and a diversion for him ended up being one of the most horrific experiences of his life.”
