The man was sentenced in two cold cases that happened in 1996 and 2003, respectively, investigators said.
Brian L. Avis pleaded guilty to the offenses on June 6, according to a statement from the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.
Detectives collected the suspect’s DNA from the girl’s bed and submitted it for comparison to a national FBI-run database, called the “Through various investigative means, detectives identified Brian Lee Avis as the suspect,” the agency said. DNA also helped lead detectives to charge Avis in the 2003 child endangerment incident. Those charges were announced at Avis’s detention hearing on the 1996 case, which had to be postponed a few days so he could be served with the new warrant and lawyers could review the new case, Atlantic County Chief Assistant Prosecutor John Flammer said.
