Suspect stopped over NYC burglary turns out to be wanted in groping attack
Manhattan cops thought they nabbed a wanted burglar last week, only to realize they had the wrong guy — who was actually a suspect in a sexual assault, police sources said.
The arresting officers realized their mistake when Oates gave them his name — and then found out the suspected burglar’s doppelganger was instead wanted for allegedly groping a 23-year-old woman in Manhattan on Oct. 23. In a bizarre twist, the suspected burglar, Tattnall, was already behind bars — apparently unbeknownst to the Manhattan cops who thought they saw him when approaching Oates.
He is accused of stealing a cell phone from a sleeping straphanger at the West 4th Street and Sixth Avenue subway station that day, according to the criminal complaint against him.
