A man was arrested and a juvenile was detained on capital murder charges after a man was found fatally shot in a running car last month., 21, in what police allege was an attempted robbery during a drug deal. It was unclear whether Oliver had an attorney. Police did not identify the juvenile because of his age.
Officers responded about 9:30 a.m. Nov. 21 to what was reported as a single-vehicle wreck in the 3500 block of Brookhurst Lane, near New York Avenue, and found Merino in the driver’s seat of a red Kia Rio with an apparent gunshot wound to the back of his head, Oliver’s arrest-warrant affidavit says. There was a .45-caliber shell casing in the driver’s seat.
Surveillance video from nearby homes showed two males getting out of the Kia — with one grabbing a bag from the victim — and then running away in different directions, the affidavit says. Someone who knew Merino told a detective that he had been flagged down by two men who wanted to buy marijuana from him a day before the shooting. The witness said Merino called and texted them to set up the transaction, according to the affidavit.
Police found Merino’s phone near the crime scene, and text messages showed him negotiating a sale, the affidavit says.
