From bad contracts handed out by Bill O'Brien to unexpected circumstances, the Texans are down a man.

From bad contracts handed out by predecessor Bill O'Brien to unexpected circumstances this season, Texans general manager Nick Caserio and coach Lovie Smith find themselves in the unusual position of playing with a roster one player shy of the NFL's 53-man limit. The Texans were one man down. Now, the salary cap-strapped organization is dangerously close to being overbudget.

In the daily swirl of the NFL transaction wire, it is uncommon for a franchise not to completely fill its 53-man roster for an extended period of time. As of Saturday, two other teams had less than 53 contracted players, according to Over The Cap, but they all have ample cap space and could realistically make corresponding moves to fill their rosters by Sunday.

It wasn’t certain who that 53rd player would be for the Texans or what position he would play. But it was that ambiguity that embodies the problem: it could have been. And a competitive 0-2-1 rebuilding team that needs every possible edge simply couldn’t afford a potentially difference-making player without doing some headache-inducing accounting.

Negotiating a veteran player’s base salary is part of the cost of doing football business for an NFL executive. Teams broker deals beneath a league-wide limit, and sometimes one franchise can simply outbid another for a player because they have more room to accommodate a larger contract. It also highlights the immense disparity between Caserio, the franchise’s previous regime and which players they viewed as part of the franchise’s long-term future.
