Police pulled over the man for running a stop sign.
A distracted driving operation by Berkeley police uncovered a driver with a loaded handgun and high-capacity magazine inside his vehicle near an elementary school, police said.
The 28-year-old Berkeley resident was near Malcom X Elementary School, located on Prince Avenue, when he failed to stop at a stop sign, according to a statement from Berkeley police. Officers were out in heavy patrol numbers, because they were using a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to go after distracted drivers.
Police said they arrested the man on suspicion of carrying a concealed firearm, having a firearm at or near a public school and driving with a suspended license. The arrest was the biggest incident during the operation. Overall, police said they stopped 29 people and issued 17 citations for using a cell phone while driving.
