In letters to sports editor Brian White, readers xxxx
: As an Ohio State alum and donor, I'd like to say I hate the black uniforms. Are the scarlet and gray uniforms at the cleaner? What's the deal?: OK, let me start with this: I hate it when sports fans blame the refs. I’ve coached my kids that if you are worried about bad calls from the refs, the team you’re cheering for should have been farther ahead so it wasn’t an issue.
As a Crew fan, I’ve been good through a number of questionable calls. A number of “no foul” when it would be in the Crew’s favor, and no review, but generous calls when it was against the Crew. I watched another player literally mount a Crew player and grind in what should have been a sexual assault arrest with no call and kept my cool. And then game against Portland happened
. Should the Crew have been up three? Yes. Should the defense have held? Of course. But to see a match that was so lopsided in calls, the complete lack of VAR intervention and an extension of stoppage time that allowed Portland to score and probably cost a postseason run, it’s just ridiculous and part of why the MLS is one of the worst leagues in the world.
The officials decide the outcome in closely matched games, not the play. And it makes it really hard to be a fan. MLS, step it up with officiating. Porter, get angrier. This isn’t a way to build support for a team, and a league, in a world where non-US soccer is so accessible now.: I like the first part of your email the most, as I have little tolerance for fans who blame the officiating. The Crew have been very bad at very important times and have nobody to blame but themselves.
At the same time, mediocre teams are scouring the land for a quartet of beatable foes so as to enter October a glistening, alumni-pleasing 4-0.
