Jedi mind tricks brush the dark side since they involve deceiving others, but Luke Skywalker used a far worse Force power before The Force Awakens.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi heavily expounded on a lesser-known dark side Force ability that Luke Skywalker made use of. Anyone who is Force-sensitive has the ability to feel others’ thoughts and emotions on the surface level. And they also have the ability to interact and suggest ideas within weaker minds, which Obi-Wan Kenobi explains to Luke Skywalker in A New Hope.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY While the Jedi mind trick dabbles in the dark side by imposing one’s needs on another, probing someone’s mind with the Force against their will is inherently a dark side power. Mind probing was first shown in Return of the Jedi when Vader searched Luke’s mind to discover his fears for about Leia. Kylo Ren uses a more overt approach to the ability on Poe Dameron and Rey during interrogations in The Force Awakens.
While it was wrong for Ben Solo to slaughter Luke’s academy in retaliation, he had every right to feel anger and betrayal for what his uncle had done. His mind was cruelly sifted through by someone he trusted, and this solidified his decision to turn to the dark side. It’s ironic that Luke would use such a dangerous Force mind trick on his own nephew when he himself had been subjected to the same horror at the hand of his father.
Did Luke Skywalker Ever Escape The Dark Side? After briefly giving in to the dark side, Luke utterly failed his nephew and the Jedi Order in a single moment. The crushing guilt of his failure drives him to sever his connection with the Force. While he doesn’t give in to the dark side again, Luke admits that the darkness won and that he had given up fighting for the light. But in another ironic twist, Luke’s exile repeats the same mistake as his masters’.
