MFAH exhibition includes works by Van Gogh, Cezanne, Manet, Modigliani and others
Dumas says putting together the exhibition wasn’t terribly complicated since the Pearlman collection was a single source. Her process is to create a PowerPoint and move works around before getting them into the museum’s gallery spaces. But even then, she found little interactions between works that necessitated adjustments. “Nice, unexpected synergies,” she calls them.
Lest anyone think Pearlman was too precious about his possessions, keeping them safely stashed somewhere, the businessman was photographed in his office at Eastern Cold Storage Co. with “Léon Indenbaum” on one wall and Manet’s blue and beautiful “Young Woman in a Round Hat” from the late 1870s on another.
The painting is nicely paired with “The Rocks,” also from 1888. From the MFAH’s John A. and Audrey Jones Beck Collection, the titular rocks course up a small hill toward a twisted tree. Painted in a gusty region in the South of France, the work finds natural subjects both pliable and resistant to the wind’s persistence.Soutine was more than just Pearlman’s point of entry. He remained a focal point of Pearlman’s collection.
