The blaze that ignited Friday grew minimally overnight, reaching 18,087 acres on Tuesday morning.
"Fire crews continue providing structure defense, extinguishing hot spots and building and improving direct fire lines," Cal Fire said."Persistent drought, critically dry fuels and tree mortality continue to contribute to the fire's spread."Humidity levels increased overnight as monsoonal moisture from the desert Southwest pushed into the area and helped calm the blaze.
The Oak Fire ignited Friday afternoon southwest of the national park, near the town of Midpines, triggering evacuations in the communities of the Sierra foothills. The blaze exploded on Saturday, tearing through bone-dry brush and dead trees amid historic drought conditions and becoming the largest fire in the state so far this year. About 6,000 residents are still under evacuation orders on Tuesday morning.
