Voices from the past: Hoffman Estates man preserves family recordings from WWII era with help from schaumlib
"I had never seen these records previously," Bill said."One was still in the original envelope sent to my mom in Wisconsin, with a return address from my dad in Quantico, Virginia."
"Both my parents are long deceased," Bill said."Having these recordings provides a glimpse into the World War II years that my siblings, I, our spouses and children never had." "While at the Schaumburg Library, I discovered that there was another record stuck to the one from Quantico," Bill said."It was from my grandfather to my mom while she was away at college. My grandfather died in 1947, so nobody from my generation has ever heard his voice. This will be a special treasure for the whole family."
"Besides letting us know about our parents in their 20s, it also gives you a better understanding of how our folks' generation sacrificed during World War II," Bill said.

'Gender Queer' tops library group's list of challenged booksA new report says books with LGBTQ+ themes remain the most complained about at public schools and libraries around the country. The American Library Association announced Monday that Maia Kobabe’s graphic memoir “Gender Queer” was the most “challenged” book of 2022, the second consecutive year it has topped the list. The ALA last month reported there were more than 1,200 complaints in 2022 involving more than 2,500 different books, the highest totals since the association began compiling complaints 20 years ago. Other books facing similar criticisms include George M. Johnson’s “All Boys Aren’t Blue,” Mike Curato’s “Flamer,” Stephen Chbosky’s “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” John Green’s “Looking for Alaska,” Jonathan Evison’s “Lawn Boy” and Juno Dawson’s “This Book Is Gay.”
