The only true contractual obligations are the loans the Treasury has incurred. There is no contractual obligation that requires us to maintain current spending levels on the military, education, Social Security, Medicare or the thousands of other things paid for by the federal government. In fact, if Congress only funded constitutional actions, federal spending could probably be cut by 75 percent.
It seems the Editorial Board is in favor of continued deficit spending that contributes to inflation, punishing low-income families the most.House Speaker Kevin McCarthy demands the Biden administration negotiate over the adjustment of the debt limit. The Biden administration properly replies there is nothing to negotiate.
If I were to tell the credit card company that I would pay my credit card bill if the credit card company would make a batch of unspecified concessions to me, that would be the equivalent of McCarthy’s demands.Re: “Monument to mass shooting victims would honor them, shame us,” Other Views, Josh Brodesky, Sunday:
