Signing Xander Bogaerts means the Padres will have less money to spend in the 2023 draft than all but two teams
That leaves the Padres with just $5.416 million to spend on this year’s draft, which begins Sunday. Only the Yankees and the Phillies have less.
Of course, at No. 25, the Padres will have to wait a bit longer to pick than they typically have under Preller, who has owned the third, sixth, seventh and eighth overall picks in his tenure. The only time they’ve picked in the back-third of the draft as they will this year, they went under slot to sign an under-the-radar prospect in high school shortstop Jackson Merrill with the 27overall in 2021. The Padres came back in the second round with an over-slot gamble on prep outfielder James Wood.
The absence of a second-round pick will make it far more difficult to play with the money like they did last year. The latter third of the draft is also a place where college hitters tend to go. Though it’s a class of player that they’ve never drafted with their first pick under Preller, the Padres are tied to two in the most-respected mock drafts: Arizona outfielder Chase Davis and Vanderbilt outfielder Enrique Bradfield.
