A municipal court judge in Millville claimed earlier this month that Latino defendants in the court were not given the option of appearing for virtual hearings. Judiciary officials say they have found no evidence of bias so far.

State legislators called for an independent investigation Thursday of bias allegations made by a municipal court judge who said Latino defendants were not given the option of virtual hearings in his courtroom.

Speaking from the bench at the end of that session, Witcher called it “the most discriminatory event I have ever been a part of in my entire career.”Leadership of the Latino legislative caucus wrote to and met twice with Judge Glenn Grant, director of the New Jersey Administrative Office of the Courts, according to the statement issued Thursday.

In its statement on Tuesday, the judiciary expressed its support for an independent review of the matter by the state civil rights division.
